Artist's Statement
"Living
in the American west, I enjoy painting the people and the land
- especially Native American women and children. I strive to
capture a deeper, sensative, personal side of my subjects while
preserving the nostalgia of the Old West, a love that fills
my soul. My great-grandmother was Native American from the
Iroquois Family.
"Riding horseback through the desert or over the mountains...
feeling the warm wind on my face or listening to the soft
crunch of the snow under the horses' hooves...
"These experiences - and riding horseback twenty miles
through the pristine Bridger Wilderness in Wyoming, over
the same trails as Jim Bridger and his party as they ventured
into the vast unknown wilderness - evoke memories and feelings
that influence my work today. I enjoy a sense of freedom,
yet an attachment to this land and its people.
"The land and subjects are a never ending source of
light, space and design that take on an excitement when playing
lights against darks, warm colors against cool, soft and
hard edges. New challenges are faced with each work as I
strive to create, through oil painting, the sensitivity,
complexity, beauty and aesthetics that invite the viewer
to visually enter and enjoy each painting - that once was
once a moment in time!"

"Music
of the Paiute Sisters", is a painting of
Shanna and Jetta, who are sisters. Flutes were widely used
among the Indian people. If you quietly listen, you can
almost hear the music. Their dresses and flutes display
the traditional designs in paintings, beads and quilt work
handed down from their ancestors. On the right side of
the painting I have painted a basket as a tribute - the
Paiute women were well known for their superior basket
weaving. The setting for this painting is inside a tipi.
A light, through the opening above, gently falls illuminating
their figures and the basket.

"Story
of the Eagle, Plains Indian": A Sioux mother
sits quietly with her daughter, on a rock, at the Cheyenne
River Breaks in South Dakota. The eagles soar majestically
above them as the mother begins to tell her daughter the
story of the eagle. A story of life, strength and courage
that will be handed down from generation to generation.

|
"Storytime,
Northern Ute": A peaceful afternoon finds
a Ute mother telling her children a story. Through her
stories, the traditions and rich legacies of her ancestors
will be carried to the next generation. The Ute people
are said to be an important division of the Shoshoni,
closely related to the Paiutes and Bannock Indians. They
were strong, owned horses and were a warlike people.
