A THREE ACRE GRAFFITI PARK IN VEGAS . . . A SOLUTION OR A LICENSE FOR LARCENY?

Jake Hill and Tono Rondone are trying to get something started in Las Vegas. A non profit organization that builds a three acre outdoor park where kids can go and bomb on walls and trains and buses for free, and legal like.

It costs Vegas six million last year to abate and prosecute graffiti related cases. The sad ones that get caught pay a heavy price, a price they mostly knew nothing about. Most don’t know that if you’re caught tagging a wall, you won’t be fined what it will cost to repaint the wall, you’ll be charged with replacing the entire wall. Fifteen grand maybe. And then, if you’re sixteen years old for example, your driving priviledges will be suspended until you’re eighteen.

But in Hill’s and Rondone’s scenario, the bombers and taggers will converge on Big E’s House of Urban Art because it’s kind of a rehabilitation facility and playground in one that's fun -- and instructive -- to be at .

There they will find subtle hints about how this activity of graffiti art is not destructive or counter productive, anti social or anything other than what it is, a natural and honest means of creative expression, to be as valued in our society as art as much as any other legitimate form.

More then this, Hill and Rondone will lead teams of former young offenders to ‘buff’, as these street artists called repairing the damage to property, as re payment for their crimes against society.

When Rondone met Hill, Jacob was just sixteen and a graffiti artist, but without a masterpiece. Tono saw the artistic talent in the young man so he put him to a test.

“Okay,” said the elder, “I’ll tell you what. I need a cover for my second solo CD. I’ll commission you to do it for me. Just my name, Tono Rondone, graffiti style."

Jake went on to not only illustrate Tono’s second solo effort but his first solo CD as well, entitled White Bred Off Ramp.

By building and operating this park as a non profit organization funded by local businesses and private donors, Hill and Rondone hope to save the city millions in graffiti related costs plus save countless young people from arrest and punishment while turning them into constructive, positive citizens with a higher self esteem. Big E's House of Urban Art will be a showcase for these artists' works, aiding them in promoting themselves as legitimate artists, and an educational foundation, teaching young graffers the value of constructive use of their creative energies.
